Software Developer Intern

The Software Developer Intern is a hands-on, full-stack software engineering role responsible for contributing to the development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of web applications and internal tools at Jaycon. The position works across frontend and backend development while gaining practical experience with cloud infrastructure, CI/CD automation, databases, containerization, and AI-enabled features. The intern contributes to production systems and collaborates with software engineers and QA to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Develop and maintain frontend features using React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript.
2. Develop and maintain backend services using Node.js/Express and, where applicable, Python.
3. Design, implement, and maintain REST APIs and integrations using structured data formats such as JSON and CSV.
4. Work with MongoDB and other data-storage technologies to support application functionality and data management.
5. Contribute to AWS-based applications and infrastructure, including services such as Lambda, S3, CloudFront, and SQS.
6. Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and automated testing using GitLab CI/CD and related development tools.
7. Support containerized development environments using Docker and work within Linux environments and Bash-based workflows.
8. Contribute to AI- and data-driven functionality, including model/API integrations, data preparation, validation, and testing.
9. Participate in code reviews and apply established software development standards and best practices.
10. Troubleshoot and debug application, infrastructure, and deployment issues across frontend, backend, and cloud environments.
11. Contribute to the development of real-time, payment, PDF-generation, 3D/CAD, and visualization functionality as applicable to assigned projects.
12. Document technical work, solutions, and relevant development processes to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.
13. Collaborate with software engineers, QA, and other technical team members to deliver features that meet functional and quality requirements.

Necessary Skills & Knowledge

1. Proficiency in JavaScript and/or TypeScript.
2. Understanding of fundamental programming concepts, algorithms, data structures, and software design principles.
3. Academic or hands-on experience with React and Node.js.
4. Familiarity with Git and standard version-control workflows.
5. Understanding of REST APIs and structured data formats such as JSON and CSV.
6. Ability to troubleshoot software issues and systematically identify potential causes and solutions.
7. Understanding of software testing and debugging principles.
8. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
9. Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and development frameworks quickly.
10. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
11. Ability to collaborate effectively in a remote, cross-functional engineering environment.

Requirements

1. Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
2. Demonstrated proficiency in JavaScript and/or TypeScript through academic, personal, or professional projects.
3. Academic or hands-on exposure to React and Node.js.
4. Familiarity with Git.
5. Familiarity with REST APIs and JSON/CSV data formats.
6. Availability to work in a remote environment and collaborate effectively with an international team.
7. Commitment to learning, receiving technical feedback, and applying engineering best practices.
8. Ability to work independently on assigned development objectives while communicating progress and blockers appropriately.
9. Background checks may be conducted on potential hires.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Working knowledge of Python and Bash.
2. Exposure to MongoDB or other database technologies.
3. Basic experience with AWS.
4. Familiarity with GitLab CI/CD, Docker, and Linux.
5. Interest or experience in AI, machine learning, or data-driven systems.
6. Exposure to Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
7. Understanding of Agile software development methodologies.
8. Exposure to Socket.IO, Stripe, Puppeteer, Three.js, 3D/CAD visualization, or similar technologies.

Working Environment

1. Remote position with collaboration across an international software engineering team.
2. Primarily computer-based work involving extended periods of software development, testing, debugging, and technical documentation.
3. Work is performed in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment where priorities may change based on product and development needs.
4. Regular collaboration with the Lead Software Developer, software engineers, QA personnel, and other technical stakeholders.
5. The role involves working with production systems and requires attention to software quality, security, reliability, and deployment practices.
6. Reports to the Lead Software Developer.

Performance Metrics

1. Feature Delivery: Percentage of assigned development objectives completed within agreed-upon timelines.
2. Code Quality: Percentage of submitted code accepted through review without significant rework or recurring defects.
3. Defect Resolution: Number and percentage of assigned bugs or technical issues resolved within established targets.
4. CI/CD & Testing Contribution: Percentage of assigned changes passing required automated tests and deployment checks without avoidable failures.
5. Development Progress: Demonstrated completion of agreed learning/development milestones and increasing independence in assigned technical areas.
